Do you ever wonder why you have acne as an adult? Isn’t it supposed to go away after high school? The answer is no. Acne can literally pop up at any time in your life. However, there are ways to help prevent and treat adult acne. The first thing you need to do is figure out why you are getting acne. Is it because you are stressed? Do you have a hormonal imbalance? Is it a food intolerance? There is a lot you can find out about yourself based on where your acne is appearing.
What Causes Acne?
In the end it really is our fight or flight response. When this response is activated our Endocrine system becomes overly active and acne soon appears. Hormones also play a role in acne as well. When the hormone Cortisol is over activated your skin starts to produce too much oil and it ends up creating a barrier and clogging your pores allowing bacteria to breed inside your hair follicles.
What to do:
First you can de-stress. Some people can become triggered very easily while others its harder but, in the end, everyone gets stressed out from something. Over time it can become hard to turn stress off and can also be hard to manage. In the end you really do not want to live a stressful life. One way to handle stress is by tricking your flight or fight response. By doing this it will allow your nervous system to react in a different way to what is happening to you allowing you to de-stress if done properly.
How to Trick Your Fight or Flight Response:
First breathe. Breathe in and breathe out. You want your exhales to be longer than your inhales. Meaning inhale for 3 seconds exhale for 5 seconds. After you finish breathing look around you, observe what you see….do not judge. Is the wall white or black? What does that sign say? What is sitting in front of you? What do you hear around you? Make 5 observations. That is all you have to do, it is that simple!

Managing Hormonal Acne:
If you did not know, your liver has a lot to do with hormonal acne. Sometimes your body might need a good detox to clean out your liver. You can find many great liver detox’s to use. You can also support your liver with Glutathione and Calcium D Glucuronate as well. If you are currently on birth control and planning on coming off of it these are great to eventually take to help support your liver.
@BodyBlissbyJess also works for a company where you can take a hormonal panel by using your saliva. It is linked here. Blood panels are not as accurate as saliva tests when it comes to hormones do to the fact when you go to get your blood drawn your stress increases, therefore, it alters the actual results you should have received.
Acne Myths Debunked:
Chocolate makes you break out – False, could just be you have a food allergy to an ingredient in chocolate but if you do not have one then this is false.
The more you wash your face the fewer breakouts you will have – False, you could actually do more harm than good and cause yourself to break out more by stripping your face of much needed oils and in the end dehydrating your face. As a result of stripping your face and dehydrating your skin you will have an over production of oils which then will cause breaks due to follicles being clogged.
Toothpaste helps breaks – False as of now, back in the day it could help because of an ingredient in toothpaste that was an anti-bacterial. However, now days that ingredient was found to be harmful and is no longer allowed to be in toothpaste. Therefore, current toothpaste does not help break outs.
Acne is contagious – False
Scrubbing your skin will get rid of acne – False, again you will just end up damaging your skin. However, you can scrub your elbows, heels, knees etc.
