Military and College
My husband has brought to my attention that he eventually wants to become an officer one way or another. After he reaches his eight-year mark he wants to become a warrant officer. With that being said we both agreed on to him going to college and completing a degree within the next three years.
Did you know that even while you are Active Duty you can still go to college? Some may not want to so that they can save the GI Bill for their child(ren). Fear Not! You can still go to college WITHOUT using the GI Bill.
BOG Waiver
Here in California if you are military or dependent of a military member you can automatically claim California Residency. Due to this you both can apply for the BOG Waiver, which is mention in the Broke Military Spouse Blog along with a link to apply.
MTA
Along with that Active Duty Military can receive MTA. MTA is Military Tuition Assistance. With MTA it helps cover tuition and other fees that come along with being in college. Active Duty military members can also apply for financial Aid as well (FASFA).
MTA will cover up to 100% of tuition and expenses for semester. Up to $250 per credit/semester hour or $166 per quarter credit hour or $16.67 per an hour. You cannot exceed $4,500 per a fiscal year which is October 30th to the following September 1st. Classes can be taken at both two or four-year colleges.
You must pay back all the money you were given for MTA IF you leave the service before the course ends, you quit the course for reasons OTHER THAN personal illness, military transfer or mission requirements, or if you FAIL the course. This means a “C” or higher for undergraduates, and a “B” or higher for Graduate Courses and a “Pass” for Pass/Fail to the Marine Corps anything under these or a “fail” will result in you being failed by the Marine Corps and you will have to pay them back.
In order to get MTA you must first pick up the form from the Education Center on Base or at the local college you want to attend. All applications must be processed not later than September 15th. You must then fill it all out AND must be signed off by the Commanding Officer.
Also most colleges will give anyone currently serving as Active Duty 6 college credits automatically AND up to 12 credits for their work done at Military Service Schools. For the Military Service Schools the service member may have to fill out the Military Evaluation Form in order to receive the extra possible credit.
