Merry Kentucky Christmas -A KFC Christmas Tradition

By now many of you are probably wondering where I have been the last few days. Well to be honest I finally found a place to stay at here in Japan, and yes a tour will be coming soon. Aside from that, my HHG and UB shipments from California have finally arrived. I have been unpacking all the boxes and organizing the house, but also ordering my Christmas Dinner.

You may be asking why I am ordering my Christmas Dinner in the beginning of November, but here in Japan it is not so strange to hear that. I am actually ordering dinner from KFC, aka Kentucky Fried Chicken. Long story short KFC is a traditional meal to have for Christmas Dinner.

It all started in 1970 when a manager overheard a tourist say they missed eating turkey for Christmas Dinner and that chicken was the next best thing. The manager went on to using it as a selling point for the “party buckets”. In 1974 these party buckets went national, however, in Japan they had their Christmas party buckets with the logo “ケンタッキーはクリスマス!” which translates to Kentucky is Christmas and since then the tradition has been adopted all over Japan.

Takeshi Okawara was the manager at the first KFC in Nagoya, Japan and the person who started this tradition. He created “Party Barrels” for Christmas, that are only sold in Japan and you must order them way in advance (or you will be standing in line forever, and still possibly not getting Christmas Dinner to take home). We opted for the original Christmas Barrel: eight pieces of chicken, a shrimp gratin and a triple berry tiramisu cake which is ¥4,000 (roughly $40 USD) when booked in advance plus we also ordered coleslaw and biscuits as well totaling it out to about ¥5,300(Roughly $52 USD). Now there are more options which are posted below and if you are in Japan you can also follow the links to reserve your Christmas Dinner.
